Helping Loved Ones Hear Better This Holiday Season

November 15, 2010

noneThe holidays are a time to gather together with family and friends. But they can be bittersweet for many—especially for those with unaddressed hearing loss. For the individual with untreated hearing loss, the growing difficulty in hearing and communication can lead to fatigue, isolation, and depression, even when surrounded by loved ones.

This holiday season, The Better Hearing Institute is urging America’s families and friends to help each other to address hearing loss. By staying alert to the signs of unaddressed hearing loss, and by encouraging loved ones to address the problem, families and friends can help each other regain their quality of life and strengthen relationships.

As part of its outreach efforts, BHI is publicizing its online Quick Hearing Check at Throughout the holiday season, people can use this interactive, online screening tool in the comfort and privacy of their own homes. We’re also encouraging people to visit our online discussion forum and information exchange. It’s a great social media tool for helping people better cope with hearing loss—whether it’s their own hearing loss or that of a loved one. By visiting, clicking on “Discussion Forum,” going to “Welcome!” and registering, anyone can take part in the discussion.

We hope that you and other hearing health professionals across the country will join us in our efforts. To help you help your practice and community this holiday season, we’ve developed a simple toolkit of materials for you to use with your patients and local media.

I’m certain that your efforts will make this holiday season a happier one.
