Thousands of hearing healthcare professionals have used BHI physician referral material to promote their practice. A key element of the BHI Physician Program is the use of the local hearing professional as the "messenger" to primary care physicians. Our message is of little value until the family physician comes to know and trust a local audiologist or hearing instrument specialist who can care for his patients. We have designed this program to rely completely on those local hearing professionals (and supported by national PSAs in medical magazines). By sharing educational material with physicians hearing professionals have a better chance of increasing hearing loss screenings during annual physicals beyond the current 15%. In forming a relationship with physicians, who are the primary gatekeeper to hearing healthcare, you increase the likelihood of referrals. In a study of 800 practices over a 3 year period we found on average dispensers who engage in physician marketing do receive referrals resulting in about one incremental hearing aid sale per month; that’s a 170 to 1 return on investment. We are developing a new program which should result in even more referrals.
